What Is the Double Marker Test?

Introduction

The Double Marker Test is a prenatal blood screening test that evaluates the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the developing fetus.

Specifically, it helps detect conditions such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13 early in pregnancy, offering parents important insights into their baby’s health.

What Does the Double Marker Test Measure?

The Double Marker Test analyzes two key substances in the mother’s blood:

Free Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-hCG): A hormone produced by the placenta.
Pregnancy-Associated Plasma Protein A (PAPP-A): A protein associated with fetal development.

Abnormal levels of these markers, combined with ultrasound findings, can indicate an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

When Should You Get a Double Marker Test?

The ideal time for the Double Marker Test is between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy.

It is often done alongside a Nuchal Translucency (NT) ultrasound scan, where fluid collection at the back of the baby’s neck is measured to assess risk factors.

The final report categorizes the risk as low, moderate, or high for chromosomal abnormalities.

Note: This is a screening test, not a diagnostic test — meaning it estimates risk but does not provide a definitive diagnosis.

Interpreting Double Marker Test Results

Low Risk: Suggests a very low chance of chromosomal abnormalities. Routine care continues.
High Risk: Suggests a higher chance of issues; further diagnostic testing (like non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), chorionic villus sampling (CVS), or amniocentesis) is recommended.
